London Olympic Games

Overview

During the London 2012 Olympic Games, Greenwich Park was home to a temporary sporting arena, designed and built to house the Equestrian events and the second largest venue of the games outside of Stratford (Capacity | 27,000).

Scope
22,000M²
5 WEEKS

Converting a world heritage site, into a professional and fully accredited field of play.

The challenge TSG faced was to convert a world heritage site, into a professional and fully accredited field of play for the London Olympic Games and then remove the structure and return the venue to one of London’s great parks once the Games were complete.

There was one major, additional issue with the venue being the fact that it was to be located on a formidably sized hill/slope. The drop in ground height across the 100m of the arena was nearly 4m. TSG’s system capitalized on this difficulty by turning a problem into an advantage and eventually converted the usable space below the field of play into ticket offices, security rooms and secure storage space.

Outcome

Project Implementation and Structural Expertise

TSG successfully completed their part of the installation in just under 5 weeks, installing over 22,000m² of HeavyDeck to hold the field of play, seating and additional merchandising space.

I worked closely with TSG from their initial appointment, through design development, delivery and ultimate removal at Greenwich Park and Hyde Park. They delivered their contacted works promptly and professionally both at the design stage and subsequent installation on what were complicated multi stakeholder schemes with challenging programmes. All works were delivered safely and within budget.
